(Below are some pictures from our 2006 Azores adventure ...)
Pico Island in the Azores
- some shots of life in this little part of the
world...
This is a group of shots from the Cachorro (which
means dog) region which is quite rocky and beautiful.
Bob and Tania were able to pick up some of the local wine
there which is sold out of a small barn.
The ferry from Horta is the best way to
visit Pico as the harbor there is not very conducive to
yachts anchoring. So Bob and Tania relaxed on the ferry and
viewed the Madalena harbor, em Pe and Deitado ilhas
(standing and lying down), as well as a jet skier jumping
the waves.
The Grutas da Torres which was only
just opened to the public in the past few months was very
exciting. You had to wear miners helmets and carry
flashlights. It was very rocky and a bit spooky.
Although the entire cave is approximately 5000 meters long
we were only able to view 800 meters of it.
The lava formations inside were unbelievable. Our
guide spoke both English and Portuguese which made the trip that
much more enjoyable. Once you view a film in the visitors
center you descend into the cave by a series of steps -
definitely for those more athletically inclined.
The Lave formations over thousands of years left behind
some interesting designs in the cave.
