Pico Island in the Azores - some shots of life in this little part of the world...

The scenery on Pico Island is amazing. Here is the vineyard region (a growing industry on this island with some relatively good wines both red and white (Tinto and Branco) that are produced). The vines are protected from the strong winds off the ocean by miles and miles of rock walls. Here you can view both the top of Pico (on a good day at 2351 meters) or back across to Faial Island and the Horta area.

Bob and Tania drove the car up the mountainside as far as you can go. From then on it is by foot another 3+ hour trek (if you have the proper equipment - which they did not). But the views still were great until the clouds moved in.

The flowers once again were plentiful (even the mosses at the top of the mountain were blooming). Here is another view of Faial Island from Pico. Hydrangeas again.

The whaleboats at Lajes are great to see as well as the harbor itself. A memorial to the whaling industry that was banned in the 1980's for good. Bob and Tania are standing in front of a crane at Cachorro that was used in whaling to bring the animals on land in order to process them for their various uses.

The coastline at Cachorro is especially breathtaking in it's various stages...
