Flores Island, Azores 2006

(Island of Flowers - Part One)

July 20 - 23, 2006

The Hôrtensias are the "kudzu" of the Azores Islands...(we like them though)

(Below are some pictures from our 2006 Azores adventure ...)

Flores Island in the Azores -  some shots of life in this little part of the world...

  • The Island of Flowers lived up to it's name everywhere you traveled...

  • Here the Hydrangeas are in full bloom and being used as boundaries for pasturelands.

  • Tania and Bob stayed the first two nights at Aldeia da Cuada (loosely translated to mean Small Village of Slippery Rocks) as the pathways were nothing but large lava rocks.  They stayed in a house "Banieras da Quinta" (once again loosely translated to mean cows and garden).  This was a barn at one time where the people slept upstairs in the winter to keep warm while the cows sleeping downstairs provided the warmth.

  • Here are some pictures from around the Aldeia which is a historical area.  Very rocky. Very Beautiful.

Portuguese version of Red, White and Blue...Bob wanted Tania to see and experience a great walking trail (8 km) to Faja Grande from the Ponta Delgado region.  He had walked this trail with his friends back in 2002 when he crossed the Atlantic before. Tania was note up to doing the whole thing (bad footwear) but did manage to do 2 hours worth of it through the pasturelands (once again the flowers were almost overwhelming).
