Approaching Faial Island in the Azores
- Bob awoke Tania to see the approach and with all the
excitement she decided to stay up and take a few pictures of
the approach to the island chain...

Bob at the Helm on approach - Tania enjoying the great
view of the island - Yeah! The Western part of
Faial Island.

Here is the outline of Faial Island - You
can see the result of the Capelinhos eruption from the Volcano in the
1950's to the left of the silhouette. Tania is trying
to wake up and see the island. Here is Pico Island
(the tallest point in Portugal at 2351 meters high) which is
prominent to our right as we approached the island of Faial.

Faial Island - Azores Here
is our approach to the Horta Marina and Harbor - The island
is so amazing with great views of pasture lands bordered by
Hydrangeas - unbelievable beauty and color (especially this
time of year)
We were fortunate to contact the
harbor personnel who assisted with tie-up and then informed
us that customs was closed for the evening (they were busy
with a festival ) but that we could go ahead and enjoy the
town until they opened the next day - GREAT!

So after a celebratory libation
Bob and Tania were off to "Peter Cafe Sport" which is legendary
among sailor folk around the world for a dinner on land (with
VERY shaky legs) and back to me for a well deserved rest...
- Here is an inside view of "Peter Cafe Sport" as well as "me"
comfortably rafted against "Teoma" with Pico Island in the
background (and my American flag flying high).

I ended up being moved three times within the harbor
until there was a private slip for me. This is normal
in this marina for "pecking order" assignments of
dockage. Pico Island currently does not have marina
facilities and so Horta is the place to be. Ferry
service to other islands makes Horta a convenient spot to be
secure.
